Together with Andrea Neyer and Bepenk I went to Bondowoso this afternoon. Thirty minutes by the public bus and there is this town that hosts a three star hotel called Ijen view. Within the hotel there is a nice swimming pool, a garden and no noise from motorcycles or cars. It was relaxing and together with fresh juice and Pizza it was holiday-like. Here the picture with a foot putih (white and me) and a foot chocolat (brown, Bepenk) :
Since summer 2007 I am in a constant move, going here and there to discover the world. I am of curious nature and up for any challenge. To a certain extent I have given up making plans since it comes differently anyway. What's next in Andrea's life? This Blog will tell you more than that.

One more time I was preparing to move to another place. However, it seemed to be a perfect place: Around a nice family with a girl, some female students, close to the office, a nice room, good breakfast. What else do I need?
The so called boarding house (students house) has its own "safety rules". The students should be at home at 9 pm, unless they call the family. I was not aware of this unwritten and unspoken rule at the moment I moved to this place. By the time I started to be annoyed to call them each time I came home later. As they usually go to sleep at 10 pm I still felt stressed not to be at home toooo late. So I decided to move to another place. Yesterday I packed my things. Today morning I had breakfast with the family and we were talking in 90% Indonesian and 10% English about me, my plans and my life in Jember, including jokes of course.
It was the last moment to tell them why exactly I want to move. I was hesitating first to ask them if I could have a key. I knew the rule and I feared to upset them with habits that are not common here (especially for girls). However, finally they understand that I am different, that during the night I am not somewhere hanging around (because I am in the office) and that I know that during the night it is dangerous to move alone in Jember.
Finally a compromise was found and I have now one more key. I am free as I wish to be and can go home whenever I want. Tonight I am going to unpack my big bag again. :-)
Tomorrow I will go to Baderan Busuki with Fran for one week. The purpose of my stay is to teach English lessons to our guides and porters to help them communicating with the tourists. In addition, I will bring the material and instructions for the women to make handicrafts that will be sold afterwards.
The lessons are prepared, the handout for the handicrafts is written and I am ready for a new experience in a (very) remote village in Indonesia.

On Friday I arrived in
I agreed to help as a volunteer and was disguised as a Dutch Lady. At the beginning I had to welcome the participants and assisted at the registration desk. Later on the day people were happy enough when I just stood there so they can take pictures. Sometimes I took refugee in one of the rooms, sometimes I agreed they come closer so they can ask questions. (The picture: From right to left: Linda, Wienda, Yuni and me(!), ready to let the visitor taste sedikit, a little of an Australian wine which they find incredibly sour)
I really needed to regulate this flow of young people. Always the same questions that, most of the time, can be reduced on questions about my age, how long I have been in
I was patient or at least I tried it to be. Sometimes I needed to leave the room to take a break in another room. The lesson learnt is that I am happy not to be a famous person in my little Swiss world. However, to some extent it was also funny to see how people react here just because I have a white skin.
In the evening we were all quite tired but managed to go to a Supermarket to buy Joghurt. Yes, joghurt! In
On Sunday morning then I reached the kitchen to make some Roeschti with onions, eggs and some kind of cheese. Without a rape for the potatoes and with two small frying pans I managed to make to delicious Roeschti cakes with cheese on the top. I appreciated the time I could spend in the kitchen, the familiar taste in my mouth and enjoyed the moment I saw my friends enjoying my self made Roeschti in
Coconut Tree Climbing
It is traditional on Java to organise once a year a coconut tree climbing competition. This year, for the first time, this event took place in Jember and attracted hundreds of people to watch the spectacle at the Alun Alun (central place). And it really was spectacular.
For Indonesian people it would be far to easy to simply climb some coconut tee. People are used to climb to pick the refreshing Gelapa Muda, (young coconut). They are sold almost everywhere for drinking. Particularly the young coconuts do have a very tasty milk inside which is a real refreshment during these hot days.
For more fun and some more competition they put some oil around the coconut trees. This makes the climbing more difficult as one slides down as soon he is a step in front of the other. Additionally it is funnier as several times you think that one has reached the top but then suddenly… schwuups, a big slide back to the beginning.
The prices on top of the trees can only be won by groups and not individuals. This is difficult to believe. Standing on someone’s feet, shoulder or head in a rude way is common everywhere. However, trying to stop the other by pulling him down shows there must be some kind of competition among the group members. Together or against each other? Finally it is only one guy that reaches the top and starts collecting the gifts. Nevertheless reaching the top without someone’s help is impossible as the trees are quite high and veeeeery slippery.

After some shopping in the centre of Jember on Monday I went with Bepenk (the number one climbing girl in Jember) to her grandma`s place. It was around 5 or 6pm.
Then, entering the apartment in the heart of Jember I see for the first time in my life Moslem women praying. Wearing a white dress they are about to finish the ritual. On a small carpet they kneel, sometimes a slight whisper from their prayers can be heard.
I am so impressed. In the background you hear the Muezzin. His voice makes the atmosphere even more spiritual. Besides their whispers and the chants from the Muezzin there is silence and density. He is calling and they follow. I imagine how many followers are praying in this moments behind the walls in Jember. How powerful it is to call people 5 times a day to pray and to make them follow the rituals defined.

A day after coming back from the mountain Argopuro I moved closer to the office of Taman Hidup. I can ride now a bycicle and simply go all by myself from the room I rent to the office. This independence makes me sooo happy.
In addition, it is in the middle of the Kampus, the students` quarter of the city and there a plenty of these small eating places, called Warung. From noodels, to rice, fried bananas, spring rolls, chicken, vegetables and all what an Asian lover may seeking for can be found.
Since, everyday I stop at another place. I test all of them to find my favourit Warung by the end of my stay in JemberRRr.
« Kamar Kecil Di Mana ? » “gamör kötschil di mana” This is one of the first couple of words one will learn when coming to Indonesia. Literally translated it is: “where is the small (=kecil) room (=kamar), hence, nothing more than asking about the toilet.
The Kamar Kecil, however may not deserve the Western definition of a toilet. A toilet? No. Toilet paper? No. More or less clean, more or less nice, the kamar kecil consists basically of a hole in the soil, a big water container and a cup. A nice version of a kamar kecil you will see in the picture, but I have seen simpler ones.
No paper? Well, I think here is the “knackpoint”, the tricky guess in the kamar kecil. What do people do when some needs are the same all over the world? The answer is in the mandi, which means “shower”. When needed, people do not look for paper; they look for a cheaper solution, which is a cup of water and a piece of soap
Personally, I needed time to adapt and the moment came when I was run out of tissues. Finally, I was forced to adapt. However, it is still special to do mandi after kamar kecil but who cares; it is just another way of doing and certainly less paper consuming! :-)
I do not want to scare people coming to Indonesia. Toilet paper and a bin are normally provided there where tourists go. People should however respect that the paper should be put into the bin and not flush it down, this may plog the sewerage.

Day 1 : Jember – Baderan Busuki
Traveling with a small, bigger, big and then again a small bus we arrive in the village. Baderan Busuki. It is fresh up here, mhhh, nice cool air like in Swirtzerland. I appreciate and breathe deeply while the others say “dingin”, cold, and go inside!
On the route a lesson to be learnt: Do not go on bad roads in the mountains without your mechanic. It looks bad but it was half of it. Ten minutes later we were on the road again.
Foto 1: Bus
For the first time I saw the seven guides and porters from the village. The got briefed on the training, however some concerns were raised. Passing information has been difficult as we need to interact through the village`s authority. In addition, the farmers are in the middle of tobacco harvesting which makes it difficult for them to leave the village for five days. A compromise was found and finally, all left for a last night at home.
Day 2: Baderan Busuki – Mata Air Satu
The days in Indonesia start early as the first prayers take place at 4.30AM. I need to get used to this new rhythm. At 7 AM the porters and guides arrive equipped with plastic shoes and some brought a bag. To carry all the material the guys are creative and quickly construct their own “kind of backpack”.

Foto 2: Pa Hari
For breakfast some rice is served and I say: “ There is no way out to escape this plate of rice at 7 AM. You will need this energy for the day and you will not regret: EAT.” Indeed, I did not regret because at lunch Indonesian people just have a snack, meaning some biscuits.
Then I have a first glance at the wonderful nature. We walk in the humid heat where clothes are wet of transpiration within fifteen minutes. Fields of tobacco pass by, we climb higher and higher. Vegetation changes and suddenly we are in the forest. It is calm and nice. The atmosphere is clean and makes me listen to the music of the birds and the wind in the trees.

Foto 3: Portrait
Day 3: Mata Air Satu – Cikasur
For breakfast: Rice and some very nice looking omelet. Happy I was until I bit on the big piece of chili in the omelet. This small green chili was enough to turmoil my stomach. I decide my breakfast strategy for the remaining days: Rice yes, but NO more chilis in the morning!
After the needed theoretical knowledge in orientation, communication, animal life, natural medicine and emergency health care during the first two days the guides and porters are up for practice now. Every day they need to define their position on the map and guide the different working groups or the entire group through the mountainous area. In case there may be something wrong, they are equipped with a radio system. I am impressed by how quick they learn. At the beginning timid and sometimes a little bit helpless, they start being independent and take initiatives.
Foto 4: Compass
During the trekking, the forest shows its beauty. The diversity is huge and I can not pass without taking many pictures. On the way I discover my favorite tree, Cemara . It has long needles which bow softly in the wind. It carries a spirit; something makes me very happy when I look at it.
The camping site is wonderful. We are on a wide savannah field close to a small river. Time to take a bath AND to smoke my first hand rolled cigarette. I want to try. The people roll their tobacco from their own farm within five seconds, I need to learn and finally appreciate. These cigarettes are surprisingly good, particularly because they use kretec cigarette paper, which is sweet.
Foto 5: Smoking
Day 4: Cikasur – Cisentor
For breakfast I let them know to make my omelet without chili. Anyway there was no omelet on the menu plan today. Instead they serve sardines in tomato sauce with rice and vegetables. After breakfast I start making a 5 – day western menu plan for our future western tourists.
Today is a great day. First I am outraged because of the metal cans that finish in the fireplace. I give orders to take them out and start cleaning up the place by myself. The guides and porters see what I am doing and quickly follow my steps. They grab a plastic bag and start cleaning the camping site with me. After the daily stretching I call them together to wash the hands. I provide soap and water and explain them how it is important to wash the hands, particularly before they start cooking!
In the afternoon we start climbing the last part of mountain Argopuro. We left the backpacks in the base camp to be faster on our feet. It is another three hours walk to go up there, and sometimes it we need to climb over or under trees. The guys go fast, they are used to be in the nature. I follow them, I like their rhythm, the speed and the way they climb! Finally, we arrive on the top of the summit, 3088 meters over see level. Great feeling, but it starts getting cold and rainy.

Foto 6: Summit Argopuro
On the way back to the base camp it starts raining and we end up running the last kilometer. Jump here, jump there, tree up and down tree branches on the left and right. But never forget: Hati hati (=be carefull) it’s getting wet and slippery. We arrive in the base camp, the fire is lit and the menu almost ready to serve.
I go quickly change my clothes; I do not want to be sick the other day. I realize that the porters and guides do not have a second pair of clothes. They are sitting below the tent or next to the fire place to heat them up, smoking. They are freezing.
Day 5: Cisentor – Taman Hidup
I resign on the Indonesian spicy and ricy breakfast. Fran serves me toast with a fried egg, toast with sugar, then I bring him some Swiss chocolate and he makes me two other chocolate toast sandwiches. That was GOOOOOD! This day, the Indonesian people eat chili (and rice of course) however not as spice but as vegetable with some sauce. So spicy, I would fear my mouth to be literally burnt by that.

Foto: Chili for Breakfast
Today we reach the top of the regions beauty: Taman Hidup, the name of the lake and of the Trekking Company. However, the arrival is not free of any effort. On the way we stop at a place where recently 600 Indonesian marines stayed for two nights. It is a mess, plastic garbage is all over. Five of us start cleaning. All the way down to Taman Hidup we do not stop.
It starts raining a little, it stops but finally it starts pouring down. Here I am again in a total adventure. The trekking path so far rather dusty turned to be a muddy adventure. Sliding and gliding down the hill I keep track of the others. Despite of the rain we continue our cleaning, but I slowly wish to arrive at Taman Hidup. Then finally we pass through the wonderful mystical forest surrounding the lake of Taman Hidup and we arrive on the camp side.
Foto 7: Forest at Taman HidupI find the porters and guides smoking and trembling because of cold. They are completely wet. I take the initiative; call three of them and we start looking for some fire wood. They need immediately to heat up themselves. By the way, I had cold too, but at least I had my rain jacket and pants on.
Day 6 : Taman Hidup – Bremi – Jember
For breakfast today: Three appreciated fried egg / toast sandwiches. Terima kasih (=thank you) again Fran!
I go for a walk on the lake side. There is something mystical in the air/at this place. I was told the myth about the princess living on the mountain and suddenly understand. The lake invites you to sit down and to think about yourself and your life. I took a quick bath in the lake but it was really quick. I did not scare the lake but something made me feel that I should better leave. This place deserves the calm it spreads and I do not dare to disturb this atmosphere.

Foto 8: Lake Taman Hidup
The last day takes us to Bremi a village with access to the public buses. The porters and guides take a bath in the river, get paid and jump on the next bus to their home village.
We need to wait for another bus for a six hour journey back to Jember. At the arrival I need some time to adjust again to the dust, the cars, the noises and people looking at me. We are back in town.
The balance of this one week training is very positive. The team Taman Hidup qualifies the training as success, the porters and guides have now sufficient knowledge and training for their future responsibilities. The echo of the porters and guides has been positive all over, despite of the early hesitations and concerns. All have been qualified as porters; two out of seven have been qualified as guide. They did an outstanding job in orientation, taking initiative, are eager to learn and keep the motivation and control under difficult circumstances. The next step for them will be my English classes during one week.
Tuesday, August 14, 2007
Tomorrow morning the team of Taman Hidup (Ari, Adek, Om Stevanus, Fran, Jibon and me) will be leaving its home in Jember. Together with the porters and guides from the rural village Baderan Busuki we will go on a training week in the Argopuro region.
For the last two days extensive preparation has been made. Enough food and equipment for 10 people for one week has been bought. Most of the vegetables and fruits will be found on place or in the forest. A handout has been made for all guides and porters that agreed to work for Taman Hidup. The knowledge will be tested at the end of the week.
The team is well equipped: A radio system is in place and allows us to do a situation-check every four hours with Jember. The guides are equipped with GPS with all reference points registered. Many of them have life experience in living in the nature. They have been dreaming of setting up Taman Hidup for 13 years, they will not miss the opportunity they have now.
It is just wonderful to be here during the period where everything is about to be ready. I can contribute to it through my experience in administration, trekking, tourism, organisation and just general knowledge. It makes me proud of doing so. In addition, people are grateful for my presence here. They take care of me and give me all the respect I deserve. They appreciate my work and follow my advices.
Hence, this will be the last post for one week, and then I will be back with one life experience more and hopefully some good pictures! Do not worry about me and take care of yourself! J
De la série : Little stories from East Java
The need to sell : The diversity of selling strategies is bigger than we can think off in our societies. We are overthrown with advertisement, companies call us at home or there are such things as leasing.
In
People in needs are creative. While waiting in Sidoarjo for the train a man passed by and just put a cereal bar on my leg. “Tidak” (=No) I sad kindly, but too late. He was walking with his carton filled up with cereal bars in the entire train station, distributing his cereal bars. I was looking around. People did not react; they took it and generally just kept it. Some opened and ate it. Not really knowing what to do I just waited. After 10 minutes he came back from his distribution tour. Without saying a word he collected the cereal bar where it was still there. Money was collected where the cereal bar has been consumed.
From pictures to reality
I like to take pictures not only for my own memories, but also to be able to share moments in my life with others. People here are curious and want to know what I have been doing in my life. They like to see my pictures; they want to learn more about me and the places I have been.
However, showing pictures from the places I visited makes them thinking of their own lifes. How it is possible, that a girl like me has been travelling so much and what are they doing wrong for not having left their country once in their life?
I try to explain how life is in
I could give many examples that may illustrate the difficulties one may encounter in trying to enter the fortress Europe/Switzerland. These people believe, they have a dream to accomplish in their life. I am not here to destroy their hope of a better life. Instead, they shall be welcomed in my home to see not a better but a different world than the one they live today. I hope that one day I can help and support them to realize their dream.
One more time I realize how unequal this world is.
Sunday, August 12, 2007
It is already the second day Iam spending here in Jember, the second day I get up reallllly early in the morning. Well, as I try to integrate myself in this society I said: why not getting early these days.
First, I need to tell my expierence in Sidoarjo`s train station. I was about to wait for 6 hours for my train that was supposed to arrive at 4 o`clock. Wishful thinking. With the ticket in my pocket, I was waiting AND waiting. Welcome! Trying to communicate with hand and food with some guys apparently having interest in communicating with me, Juni, a girl arrived. Straightforward she asked me what ticket I have. She took me immediately to the ticket office because she was promising me that I do not want to travel Economy. If I want to have a seat and if I have an interest in arriving not at midnight, I need to buy a business ticket. 5 minutes later the train arrived. Indeed I was really happy to have a seat.
Arrival in Jember: Bathroom was the first priority after 4 hours travelling, then my friends were already looking for me. Traffic in Indonesia is not that bad then I remembered from my last Indonesian trip. I feel like having my own motorbike to get to work and then back. I would like to be more independent. So far, Fran (a responsible from Taman Hidup) and Juni are driving me a lot. However, I am also thinking of taking an Ocheg (motorbike- taxi) or the bus as soon as I have the orientation, because there are no detailled maps from the city. Very generally speaking and only from the first impression, it is a lot like in Cambodia, however a majority in Jember are Muslem. You find all these small places along the street where you can buy food, everything is a bit dusty, busy and with the air polluted. A particularity is the NICE smell of the cigarettes. Most of them do have some kind of flavour, slightly sweet, hardly to describe.
Indeed, I am already tired again. Euhh, no rest or a bit of holiday? People here get up early, very early - I get up early, mainly because of the tuuutuut, or biiibiip or any other noises in these busy streets. Most of the people do their first prayers at 4.30h and do then some housework. On Saturday I went at 7 o`clock to Taman Hidup where I was warmly welcomed. We had our first discussions and some planning. Today Sunday is always a special day because of Alun-Alun. This is a kind of Sunday morning gathering for doing Aerobic and some Tai-Chi on the central city-place. I got up at 5.30h to visit the market with Juni. I had a Pecel, this is a traditionnal Indonesian plate consisting of compact rice, vegetables, sweet peanut sauce, tempee (fried soja beans), crupuk (fried rice flavour). It was delicious! I try to write all things down. I do not want to lupa (=forget) the notions and words I am encountering during my daily life.
So, next post will come soon. Take care of yourself and give some news!

I just spent an excellent evening yesterday. On the bus top I met Angela from Singapore who was waiting for her Mom to arrive. They wanted to go to the city center as well, hence we went to the city center together. Luckilly we saw the end of the fireworks of Singpore`s 24th birthday celebration. With the culisse of the towers, it was simply spectacular.
We were walking arround a bit and then we went to eat somewhere Satay. Mmmmh, it has been since Cambodia I have not eaten Satay, a real pleasure.
I went to sleep very late, buses were rare and taxis were suddenlty all busy. This morning I had to get up early, however the flight was all ok. Once in Surabaya, I just missed the train by 10 minutes.... need to wait for another 6 hours for a 4h trip to the final destination: Jember. If pronouning you need to say JemBRRRRRR because if you say JemBeRRRR, they do not understand!!
My flight schedule was tight, I knew it. The airplane from Zurich to Singapore was a bit late and the journey quite turbulent. This was enough to miss the airplane that was supposed to bring me to Surabaya, Indonesia. Glad to travel with Singapore Airlines, they proposed to go to the hotel in town, visit the city and take the flight tomorrow. Hence, for one day I will sleep, eat and go with a taxi to/from the airport on the charges of the company. I could not resist this opportunity even though I will arrive one day later in Indonesia! :-(
Just arrived now in the hotel room, I will get some rest, have lunch and then explore Singapore on its birthday party – Happy Birthday Singapore !!! The program for tonight: party, fireworks and millions of people.
Report and pictures will follow!
Sunday, August 05, 2007
I am sitting now in the airport of Zurich, waiting till I can board the airplane with destination to Singapore and then to Surabaya, Indonesia.
(to see where Jember is, just go with the cursor to one of the rectanles)
What is it all about going to Indonesia again? The idea was to go on travelling and link a good portion of adventure with some useful volunteer work. How much time I will spend on travelling still needs to be defined, however, my responsibilities as volunteer for Taman Hidup are well defined. What is this about? It is the initiative undertaken and elaborated by Lia Heimgartner, Ari, Adek, Stevanus and others to promote the region of East Java in the field of Ecotourism.
So far, East Java gets only very few tourists. The ones who visit the famous Mt. Bromo with the spitting Mt. Semeru in the background usually pass through the area by bus or train on their way to or from Bali.
Taman Hidup is an Indonesian business with the purpose to give locals and foreigners the possibility to explore and experience the very rich and impressive region of East Java. The region’s soil is volcanic, thus there can be found a very wide and fantastic biodiversity with tropical rainforest and mountain rainforest. Some of the area is still very natural and only very rarely explored by tourists. It is home to abundant wildlife such as leopards, black monkeys called Lutung, birds and snakes.
Thanks to Taman Hidup, tourists can explore this region with different trekking tours, daytrips or individual arrangements according to their wishes. Guides, porters, professional trekking material, knowledge and experience are already provided and secure an unforgettable adventure in the nature.
Besides, Taman Hidup pursues key development goals. It shall improve the living standard of local people in the village by giving the opportunity to raise revenue. Locals can be active as guides or porters, villagers will produce and sell handicrafts. Through the work they will increase their capacities which will open them other opportunities in the future.
In May 2007 the foundation stone was laid to start the project Taman Hidup. The Swiss Travel & Outdoor Store TRANSA agreed to generously support our idea in means of providing us with high quality trekking material. The KfE (Komission für Entwicklungsfragen) of the University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ) agreed to support us with a generous financial fund to set up our project.
What is my role?
My main work will be to give English classes to the guides and porters in three different villages. In addition, I will prepare Handicraft workshops for villagers and elaborate with them the production of goods to be sold in a small shop. Besides, I will participate and assist at a weeklong training session, elaborate a leaflet to be printed asap and further motivate people to make one or two step ahead with their own tasks! This is already a lot, particularly when I remind Matthias’s remark: When you set your objectives in a project taking place in a developing country, you should better cut them by half and then they are likely to be achieved.

A great challenge and experience will start in my life, in now minus seven days. Today in a week I will arrive in Jember, my home base for the next three months. Sometimes I am nervous, sometimes I am scared, but most of the time I am forward looking and confident.
A detailed description about my work in Indonesia will follow, soon.
The Visa should arrive tomorrow, the e-ticket is ready yet, the medical equipment is prepared. I realize that it is not the first time I am up to an adventure, however, the first time alone, for a three-months period and completely involved in the community's life.
At the moment in Geneva, I am enjoying this wonderful place with my friends for the last time.

It was a call from Washington D.C. on Friday afternoon that led me to take a final decision: Yes, I will go to Indonesia - ASAP! At least for three months. The call was not negative or bad at all! Instead of doing the internship at the Swiss embassy in Washington starting in September, I can/could begin in January. Could? Yes, because I can decide till the end of September.
Yesterday, after realizing that cheap flights to Indonesia do not exist, I bought an excellent flight, a bit more expensive however. Instead of having a transit break of 7 hours in Dubai and 12 hours in Colombo, I will have 1 hour in Singpore - directly to Surabaya. Here you go:

- Colonisation, décolonisation, néo-impérialism: Est-ce que les pays de l'est sont des méchants "and just addicted to their absolute and relative economic benefits in everything that is related to North-Sout relation" Weltverschwörungstheorie!

Je me mets à rentrer.

Demain, mon premier examen.

Isn't it a luxury these days not to here a noisy little signal in the morning telling you to get up? Isn't it sometimes necessary to let the body decide on its own when he feels ready to start a new day? Wasn't it a great moment yesterday night saying: Tomorrow I will sleep as long as I can - give you some rest and you will pass an excellent day.
Today morning: No noisy signal from the alarm clock but some nice little birds singing outside. Some raindrops on the roof, telling you that sun hasn't come back yet. No cars, no bus, everything is peacefully quiet.
Opening one eye, I start wondering what time it is - remember I did not put the alarm clock! My cell phone says 7:30 AM. It is not what I expected, neither what I wanted to see. Hopefully I fell back to my dreams. Then some time latter, I started moving arround, could not sleep anymore. My body decided not to rest anymore, he is his own boss and this Sunday I will listen to him. I go to the kitchen, making some tea and I see: 10:40AM. Surprised to see that but also proud of myself seeing that I have not lost the ability to sleep exhaustively.
Going into my room again, I check my e-mail, I look on my cell phone again. Indeed, it is only 8:10 AM. What does that mean now? I hardly slept eight hours, I woke up when my body decided to, nothing wrong with that. But why can't I just sleep longer, get some additionnal rest - getting up at 8, is almost like starting a day during the week. However, getting up at 8 means having the time of an entire morning to do plenty things - plenty things for my studies - hence, plenty of work. A Sunday morning welcoming myself for work - I will take advantage of that and finish my paper on the business strategy... :-)
It was in February, during our holidays Petra, Nicole and I went to Budapest to pass some interesting, funny and dancy days. Finally I got the pictures from our excellent host - David - who had the pleasure to welcome us ;-) in exchange of some high-quality entertainment from the three of us.
Party, fun and party, I think the picture here below - from the great bar called Zimpla, tells a lot:

To what extent can it be possible that multinationals can make business in the so called bottom of the pyramid (BOP) in emerging markets. With BOP is meant the lowest socio-economic sector earing up to 2USD a day.
The interest of multinationals in making their business in this sector presents a new challenge - hence, conditions, opportunities, norms and the environment are different to those usually seen in developped countries.
Certainly there are examples, where buisness can establish for successfully selling its products to these poor people. The main dispute, however, is the question to whom exactly, then it seems, that even the most simplest goods can not be purchased by all poor people. (anyway I have trouble in defining poor people)
What does it mean - earning 2USD a day. Does it suffice to send the kids to school, have sufficient shelter, sanitation and the means to provide basic medical assistance to the family? It is hard to imagine that these people may have a plus of money to spend on something else. However, this statement is subject of discussion. It is argued that even the poorest do have a sens of luxury, they have a preference for quality and are willing to pay for it. Well, isn't it hard to imagine, when thinking about the poorest basic struggle for daily life? How can uncertainty to provide food and water on a daily basis, fear of having the house destroyed and diseases leave the margin for a choice being made? Isn't the choice or rather absence of choice being made while defining the focused customers?
My task is to see to what extent multinationals (no yet making the distinction between Western multinationals or domestic multinationals) may succeed in making profits while selling to the poorest. We will see, if any, or at all goods (or service) may find sufficient "resonance" in the BOP allwoing multinationals to get their business there.
What must have happened to me that I am thinking about such a subject on Sunday evening. I guess it is the will to finish this last paper of 1000-2000 words just as soon as possible. It is a burden, because I need to focus on some smallers and biggers exams in the same time. The moment I will send this last paper will be a big relief.
